Summary: Two hearts waiting for the ones they love. Can they hold on long enough?
The lights are dim and the only sound that can be heard are the crickets and the hustle of the wind. It's a chilly autumn morning and the brunette yawns while waiting for the promised who promised to meet him on that bench. He looks at his watch and it reads 3:15AM. He still has 45 minutes until his breaktime is over. A warm paper cup with fuming coffee is placed beside him and he looks up with a smile.
“Sorry to make you wait, Uepi... I grabbed these first before coming here.” The tall man explains and takes a seat beside him.
Ueda has never been so close with the taller man since forever. Many times in the past he wished he could switch places with Yuichi even just for a day just to be able to be closer to their sempai. Now, only a cup of coffee separates them and Ueda fumbles to take the said cup in his hands. “It's okay, sempai. I just got here several minutes ago.” he responds gleefully although he came there 5 minutes before the agreed time all because of his excitement.
Junno looks at him with kind eyes, smile never leaving his face. Since college, the tall man has been known for his cheerfulness and there is no one in their campus who doesn't get affected by it. And for Ueda, that cheerfulness and the rest of Junno made the brunette harbor strong admiration and hidden affection that even his best friend isn't officially aware of. “You haven't changed a bit...” Junno muses before taking a sip of his coffee, crossing his long legs as he turns away and leans forward.
“It's just two years sempai, what do you expect?” he chuckles and sips on his own coffee to hide his nervousness.
“And you haven't changed either. Still all smiley and composed.” he manages to say. Even if this turns to be a meaningless discourse, he will cherish it forever.
“So how is it going with you? I heard from Maru that you always have a new boyfriend every month.” the taller man teases and Ueda's eyes widen in shock.
“What? No! That's not true, sempai!!! That idiot! He's making up stories. I have been single for half a year now.” He huffs and pouts and sinks on the other end of the bench while staring at his cup of coffee.
The taller man bursts out laughing, and looks at the other with amusement. “I was just joking Uepi. Don't be so embarrassed! And Maru did not say those things. I was just teasing you.” he pats Ueda's head and pokes his cheek making the shorter man hold his breath for a second.
Ueda glances at him, still pouting with his heart wanting to jump out his chest. “Tsss...” he hisses and gathers enough courage to punch Junno's arm lightly.
“You're still the same.” the taller man then concludes. “Has Maru stayed the same too? I've been wondering since I graduated. Is he doing well in the student council?”
“Yes. I am really amazed with how he manages his time. Don't worry sempai, still as dedicated as usual.”
“Yokatta...” he sighs in relief. “You know, he always needs to be encouraged right? It's nice to know he is more confident now.” The smile he has now is different than usual and on and on as they continued chatting, Ueda noticed that all they have been talking about is his bestfriend.
Ueda bites his lip as he tells more about Yuichi. He can feel a stinging pain as they went on with their conversation. “Sempai, his nose is his good luck charm. He'll make it through for sure.” he jokes but deep inside is a surge of bitterness making its way in his heart.
Junno laughs one more time before turning serious. “But really, how are you two doing now?”
“Well, though it's really stressful, me and Yuichi are coping. College is tough but since I have my best friend with me, things get better eventually.” he laughs a bit.
The taller man smiles and sighs in relief. “You should take care of each other ne?”
Ueda sips some more until his cup is half-empty. “Hmmm... But Yuichi has Koki-kun now.” He muses dreamily.
“Who?” Junno moves to the edge of his seat, becoming more attentive.
Ueda puts down his cup and rubs his palms together before responding. “Oh... Yuichi has a boyfriend now. They've been together for a couple of months already. I think around spring...” he rubs his chin as he tries to remember. “Yes, I introduced Koki to him in springtime.” he recalls.
Junno just nods and a look of disappointment is evident on his face which Ueda doesn't fail to catch on. “I see... is he taking care of Maru?” Ueda nods back. “Well, if you are the one who vouched for him, I guess I can relax. I trust your instincts, Uepi.”
“Ne, sempai...” he looks at the taller man, “You like Yuichi don't you?” somehow he bravely asks even though he's not sure if he wants to hear the answer.
It takes some moment before Junno reacts. He just smiles and looks at the far end of the garden. “And it took you more than two years to notice. I wonder how much longer it will take with Maru.” He looks at the other man again, his gaze penetrating the other's eyes. “Uepi, let's just keep it this way. I don't want to trouble him.”
Ueda nods and looks away. Everything suddenly makes sense. The concern that was branded as brotherly sympathy from back then... it was all but unrequited affection. He looks at his watch and turns back to the taller man. “Sempai, my break is almost over. I should go back now. Thanks for tonight.” he bows politely. “And tomorrow's coffee is on me.” he smiles though it doesn't reach his ears like when they started their conversation today.
“Ah.., I should get going too. Ja!” The tall man finishes his coffee and follows soon after.
Ueda walks fast. The cold breeze grazing his skin and he hugs himself as he goes back inside, wondering what to do keep his heart from breaking apart.
Ueda isn't new to one-sided love. However, it's the first time he is vying with his best friend for someone's attention. Yuichi does it effortlessly and he's still very much oblivious like he has been for the past years. He can't get himself to hate his best friend though since he has no idea of their sempai's feelings... and he's very much in love with Koki. So Ueda thinks he can hold on and keep going just like this. Maybe his sempai will get tired and he can take his chance with him.
“Koki-kun seems to be a very nice person... and protective too. I can rest assured that he's in good hands.” Junno says on their way home after a 'double-date' that Yuichi carefully planned.
Ueda smirks, “I told him that I'll hunt him down if he makes my bestfriend cry.”
“Aaaaah... kowaii~” Junno makes a face and Ueda can't stop his heart from beating so fast again while he laughs at the taller man's weird humor.
They walk in silence after that until they reach the bus stop. It's then that Junno starts thinking out loud again. “Waiting for the bus is much easier than waiting for the one you love, ne?”
Ueda tilts his head as he ponders about it. “What if the bus never comes? Don't you think that it's not meant for you? What if you're better off taking the train?” he asks hopefully.
The tall man breathes out heavily. “How will I know? Unless, I confess to him but that would be horrible because he is happy with his boyfriend right now.” He sighs again. “I'm not the kind of man who gives up so easily anyway. Don't you have someone so special who's worth the wait?”
Ueda bites his lip and looks at him deeply, wondering if confessing now will end his misery but thinking about the situation, he decides that his sempai is right. “I do... and seeing sempai so strong and patient motivates me to keep holding on as well. I think I can keep waiting until he sees me too.” smiling sadly, he sits under the waiting shed.
“Now that's the spirit. Let's do our best ne! Our time will come one day.” there is that hand again ruffling the brunette's hair.
The bus arrives and Junno pats Ueda's shoulder. “Don't be so gloomy now. C'mon, I'll send you home.”
Ueda smiles and makes himself contented with these moments he can share with his sempai. At least he has the chance to be this close to him. That alone makes up for the sadness of this one-sided love.
A/N: Uwah... It's been so long since I last wrote a JunDa fic. Should I make JunDa end up together in this fic? Hmmmm.... (^_~)
